Okay, Imagine a 50’s town, steam rising out of the sewers, the sound of old vintage cars driving past. An ocassional sound of gunfire, and sirens. Everywhere there’s either gunmen, drug dealers, druggies, or pimps.

Suddenly out of a dark alley, a guy in a fedora and a trenchcoat walks out; an old P.I.

As the sax kicks in, he’s smoking a cigarette
walking down the street
at the end, he’s confronted by a gunman
and he gets shot
Thus the flatlining.

I am revamping my composition demo for Game Developers Conference this year. I’ve revisited some of my favorite pieces from past projects with better quality samples (mostly East-West Symphonic) and looking for some peer feedback. Most specifically, I am looking for ideas about how to further improve these mixes, which one is the best, and whether or not these are good enough to show publishers without seeming amateurish. Thanks for any help!

Description/Purpose: Written for a Boss Battle. The mood starts off violent and dark with embellishments from the horns but soon shifts into a major key and brightens the mood and brings back a ray of light. Essentially representing the fact that adventure does indeed hurt. After awhile, the bright theme degrades and is interrupted by a loud diminished chord bringing the score back to the beginning.

Instruments: Horn in F, Trombone, Tuba, Timpani, Percussion, Violins, Violincello

A simple, calm piece used to indicate a serene and peaceful setting.

Description/Purpose: Despite its name, Hellhole Heaven is written as if it were just Heaven. The piece follows common practice in order to create a very tonal and proper sounding piece. In order to evoke the feeling of Heaven even moreso, the melody begins in the harp and is later passed off to the flute for awhile. All the while, calm, quiet strings accompany while growing and dissipating. Over all, just a simple, quiet piece.

Instruments Used: Flute, Harp, Strings

A 'marvelous' bombastic theme.

Description/Purpose: For a Mountain setting in a real-time RPG. The piece starts off awkwardly since the Marvelous Mountains aren’t as Marvelous as we’re lead to believe. However, once things get underway, a loud, bombastic fanfare chimes in that is quickly forgotten shortly after and gives way to a rousing, syncopated bass line. The horn and violins come in with a fast-paced melody which switches between 4/4 and 5/4. Giving way later on to a serious of chords before the piece begins to quiet down in order to start the loop.

Instruments: Horn in F, Trombone, Tuba, Timpani, Percussion, Piano, Strings

This piece was written for a platform game called BioTux being developed by NinjaNumberNine. It is for a collection of levels set in a North-American style forest. The song features a Pan-flute and a Xylophone style instrument as lead instruments and has a strong forest theme. Pop style drums were initially included but were replaced by request to fit the theme better.
